Sir Accolon

Pawn

1997 Number 12 of 100

Sir Accolon originally represented the Ancient Celtic Cult of the Dog (associated with Llud, son of Beli, god of light, after whom London (Lludtown) was named). But Accolon was used in the Middle Ages as a Christian metaphor for the hubris and arrogance of the nobility and wealthy. He was one of Morgan le Fay's many paramours who tried to cause Arthur's demise. Morgan le Fay secretly exchanged a false Excalibre for the real one, which she gave to Accolon. Accolon gravely insulted Arthur, who was forced to fight Accolon to the death. Arthur was hacked up badly as he fought with the false Excalibre and Sir Accolon fought with the real one. Just as Accolon was about to administer the coup de grace, The Lady of the Lake appeared and magically caused the real Excalibre to change hands.
